During a PRK operation the surgeon removes the surface layer of corneal epithelium.
The exposed cornea will be treated with laser. After the laser treatment a therapeutic contact lens will be placed on the eye. It takes up to one week for a new epithelium to grow.
Postoperative treatment and recovery of vision takes more time and the eye will be sore for about 2-3 days after the operation.
The patient may experience slight pain, tearing and a sensation of foreign body in the eye for about a week. Vision stabilises within one week to one month.
PRK operation may also cause corneal haze, which will disappear in 3-6 months.
