Laser eye surgeries

FEMTOLASIK

Laservisioon is the first eye centre in Estonia to use the most recent FEMTO LDV technology in LASIK surgery.

Our new procedure is called FemtoLasik.
The procedure combines our long experience, knowledge and the World’s leading technology – the Swiss femtosecond laser and superfast Allegretto 400 hz Eye-Q Excimer laser.

Our femtosecond laser

In FemtoLasik procedure, we use high-precision laser made by the Swiss Ziemer Group. The devices are developed and manufactured in the same districts, where many other types of precision equipment are made, including the Rolex and Omega watches.

Femtolaser’s performance

The duration of one femtosecond laser pulse is 0.000,000,000,000,001 seconds. The laser sends millions of pulses in a second and applies very little energy to the eye.

Safe and precise operation

  • The eye is operated without using a mechanical blade – the corneal flap is created with a laser.

  • Removing the corneal flap with the laser is more precise and safer than making a cut with a microkeratome.

  • The dimensions of the corneal flap are determined by a high-end technological computer, thereby ensuring its exact size.

  • Use of laser technology enables to remove the flap faster. This, in turn, reduces the duration of the operation and possible risk for inflammation and infections.

  • Since no cutting blade contacts the eye, the micro-trauma on the cellular level will be smaller than when using a microkeratome.

  • Post-surgery studies have shown that use of femtosecond laser does not damage the deeper layers of the cornea.

  • For the patient, the use of femtosecond laser means faster recovery, less discomfort and minimal post-operation prickling sensation.

LASIK

LASIK operation is a vision correction procedure, where the surgeon creates a hinged flap of thin corneal tissue, usually of 90, 130 or 160 micrometres. The flap is then folded back for the laser procedure. For this method, a most advanced instrument called microkeratome MORIA M2 is used.

When the laser procedure is completed, the flap is repositioned and it will be “glued” naturally by osmotic pressure within approximately 2 minutes. The flap protects the eye after laser treatment and, therefore, recovery from the operation is almost painless.

The operation takes ca 5 minutes per eye. Recovery from the operation is fast. Vision will be probably blurry for about 3 hours, but it will clear up within 1–2 days.
The flap will become fastened permanently within a week; therefore, the patient should avoid rubbing the eye.

PRK

During a PRK operation the surgeon removes the surface layer of corneal epithelium.

The exposed cornea will be treated with laser. After the laser treatment a therapeutic contact lens will be placed on the eye. It takes up to one week for a new epithelium to grow.
Postoperative treatment and recovery of vision takes more time and the eye will be sore for about 2–3 days after the operation.

The patient may experience slight pain, tearing and a sensation of foreign body in the eye for about a week. Vision stabilises within one week to one month.
The PRK operation may also cause corneal haze, which will disappear in 3–6 months.
